The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is progressing its three-year eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), with eight projects selected to test advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft and operational concepts across 26 states. The overarching program continues to provide insights into AAM integration, and constructs the groundwork for further evolution of the industry.
The program’s first operation took place on 10 July, when BETA Technologies, United Therapeutics Corporation and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation conducted a flight test of organ-transport capabilities. The mission included a package containing a genetically modified pig heart and involved multiple aircraft and airports between Virginia and Maryland, using BETA’s ALIA electric aircraft.
Announced by the US Department of Transportation in March 2026, the eIPP brings together government agencies, aircraft manufacturers and operators to evaluate potential applications for next-generation aviation. These include passenger transport, regional connectivity, cargo logistics, emergency medical response, wildfire response and search-and-rescue operations.
The eight project leads are the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Utah Department of Transportation, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the Florida Department of Transportation, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the City of Albuquerque.
Planned activities include assessing eVTOL passenger operations at New York’s Downtown Manhattan Heliport, developing regional air links between major Texas cities, and testing cargo and personnel transport to energy-industry locations in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Other projects will examine medical transport, autonomous flight and regional services across multiple states.
In Albuquerque, the city is working with Reliable Robotics on autonomous cargo operations. North Carolina’s project includes piloted medical and regional flights, alongside development of an autonomous operation extending into Virginia.
The FAA will use operational data from the projects to assess safety risks, system redundancy, mitigation measures and operational constraints. The findings are intended to inform future policies, procedures, training and performance standards for integrating AAM aircraft into the National Airspace System.
