Michigan’s Uncrewed Triple Challenge: Pioneering the Future of Autonomous Mobility
Michigan hosted the inaugural Uncrewed Triple Challenge (UTC), a groundbreaking competition that showcased the state’s leadership in autonomous mobility. This state-sponsored event brought together teams from academia, industry, government, and the military to test the capabilities of unmanned systems across maritime, aerial, and terrestrial domains. The challenge not only highlighted technological advancements but also underscored Michigan’s commitment to fostering innovation in the field of autonomous transportation.

The competition commenced at the Alpena Harbor in Thunder Bay, where teams initiated the maritime segment by navigating unmanned watercraft to a boat located five nautical miles offshore and returning to the harbor. Following this, the aerial segment required drones to autonomously fly approximately 58.5 nautical miles to Camp Grayling, navigating varying altitudes and obstacles. The final leg involved ground vehicles autonomously traversing a 23.5-mile land course through rugged terrain to reach the finish line at Camp Grayling’s Parade Field.
In Michigan’s Uncrewed Triple Challenge, SiFly didn’t just break the world record—they shattered it. Their Q12 drone completed two consecutive 26-mile flights while carrying a 10-pound payload, enduring strong winds up to 32 mph. This achievement more than doubled the previous world record for multirotor drones, which stood at 11 miles. The Q12’s performance demonstrated unprecedented endurance and payload capacity, setting a new standard in drone capabilities. DroneXL.co+4LinkedIn+4LinkedIn+4
Participants were evaluated based on speed, efficiency, and the seamless transfer of payloads between different modes of transportation. Awards were presented in several categories: Best in Maritime was awarded to Mythos AI; Best in Air went to SiFly; Best on Land was claimed by Dataspeed; and the Best at Payload Transfer recognized the collaborative effort of SiFly, Mythos AI, and Dataspeed. The trio also secured the Best Overall Team award, highlighting their exceptional performance across all segments.
The UTC attracted teams from seven states and three countries, reflecting the global interest in autonomous systems. Spectators had the opportunity to witness the competition from designated viewing areas in Alpena and Camp Grayling, with live streaming available for remote audiences. The event featured opening ceremonies with remarks from dignitaries, musical performances, and technology displays, fostering community engagement and awareness of the advancements in autonomous mobility.
Beyond the competition, the UTC served as a catalyst for discussions on the practical applications of autonomous systems. Governor Whitmer highlighted the potential of such technology in delivering medicine to isolated communities, supporting military operations, and enhancing manufacturing logistics. The event underscored Michigan’s strategic investments in infrastructure and innovation ecosystems to support the development and deployment of autonomous technologies.
In conclusion, Michigan’s Uncrewed Triple Challenge marked a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous mobility. By successfully integrating unmanned systems across multiple domains, the competition demonstrated the feasibility and potential of such technologies in real-world scenarios. The UTC not only showcased the state’s commitment to innovation but also set a precedent for future endeavors in the realm of autonomous transportation.
The following competition participants received awards:
Best in Maritime: Mythos AI ($15,000)
Best in Air: Sifly ($15,000)
Best on Land: Dataspeed ($15,000)
Best at Payload Transfer: Sifly to Mythos AI to Dataspeed ($5,000)
Best Overall Team: Sifly, Mythos AI, Dataspeed ($30,000)
