Skyports Infrastructure and Linden Airport Services Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transform Miami’s Watson Island Heliport into a modern facility for both traditional helicopters and next-generation AAM electric aircraft.
The collaboration aims to modernize and operationalize the historic site, creating an immediate landing zone for rotorcraft and a future-ready hub for AAM electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The development plan includes engagement with aircraft operators and real estate developers to prepare for the launch of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) services in the region.
Located between Miami Beach and Downtown Miami, Watson Island occupies a strategic position near key areas such as Brickell, Fisher Island, and the Port of Miami. The site has a long aviation history dating back to the early 20th century and once served as a primary hub for vertical aviation in the city. Its central location is expected to provide significant accessibility for commercial operators and residents as South Florida emerges as a leading global market for eVTOL operations.
Linden Airport Services Corporation has been involved with the Watson Island project for over 20 years, having secured FAA and FDOT approvals while currently processing final local occupancy permits. The company also manages Linden Airport in New Jersey, a major helicopter base for the New York metropolitan area. This experience will be combined with Skyports’ background as the manager of the Downtown Skyport in London, which is currently the world’s busiest civilian commercial heliport.
Robbie Ladov, General Manager of US Heliports and Vertiports at Skyports Infrastructure, said, “Watson Island is an extraordinary asset for Miami and a pivotal location for the future of urban aviation. By partnering with Linden, we are combining Skyports’ global leadership in skyport development with Linden’s decades-long dedication to preparing this site. Together, we are laying the foundation for a next generation facility that will serve the region for decades to come.”
The partnership focuses on restoring the heliport to its former prominence while ensuring the site is developed to support safe and scalable AAM growth.
Paul Dudley, CEO of Linden Airport Services Corporation, added, “Our commitment to Watson Island spans more than 20 years, navigating regulatory and operational milestones to get this site ready for the future. Partnering with Skyports enables us to advance the heliport into a modern skyport, engage key aviation and real estate partners, and help establish Miami as a leader in advanced air mobility.”
Both companies intend to continue working with local and industry stakeholders as development activities progress at the site.
