The SEMA Future Tech Studio, a focus point for EVH News and AAM Nation of the 2025 SEMA Show held November 4–7 in Las Vegas, introduced two advanced aerial platforms to the automotive aftermarket industry: the Pivotal Helix eVTOL aircraft and Heven AeroTech’s Zepher Z1 hydrogen-hybrid VTOL drone. These technologies extend SEMA’s focus from ground-based performance into sustainable air mobility, offering new opportunities for integration, customization, and commercial application within the specialty equipment ecosystem.

The Pivotal Helix is a single-seat, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft certified under FAA Part 103 as an ultralight, eliminating the need for a pilot license. Powered by eight ducted electric propulsors, it achieves vertical lift, transitions to forward flight at up to 63 mph, and delivers a 20–25-mile range per charge. With a foldable carbon-fiber airframe designed for garage storage, the Helix supports rapid deployment and user-friendly operation via intuitive joystick controls and triplex-redundant flight systems. First customer deliveries are scheduled for 2026, with pricing starting at $190,000.
Engineered for efficiency, the Helix consumes up to 30% less energy than conventional rotorcraft in cruise, positioning it as a viable platform for urban air mobility, emergency response, and recreational use. Aftermarket suppliers can explore modular upgrades—such as enhanced battery packs, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, or aesthetic customization—aligning with SEMA’s tradition of personalization and performance enhancement.

The Heven AeroTech Zepher Z1 is a modular, hydrogen-electric hybrid VTOL unmanned aerial system (UAS) offering 8–10 hours of flight endurance and operational ceilings exceeding 12,000 feet. Utilizing Intelligent Energy fuel cells, the system generates onboard electricity from compressed hydrogen, emitting only water vapor and enabling refueling in under five minutes. Its payload-agnostic design supports interchangeable mission modules for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), logistics, and precision agriculture.
With five times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries by weight, the Zepher Z1 addresses critical limitations in drone endurance and operational tempo. Validated through U.S. Army Research Laboratory high-altitude testing and integrated with field-deployable hydrogen generation systems, the platform delivers tactical reliability and scalability. For automotive service providers, it enables drone-assisted diagnostics, parts delivery, and remote inventory management—creating new revenue streams in the aftermarket supply chain.
Together, the Helix and Zepher Z1 represent a strategic convergence of electric and hydrogen propulsion technologies, each tailored to distinct segments of the mobility market. The Helix targets individual owners and fleet operators seeking accessible personal air transport, while the Zepher Z1 serves enterprise and government clients requiring persistent aerial capability.
The SEMA Future Tech Studio’s presentation of these platforms signals a broader industry shift toward integrated ground-and-air ecosystems. Aftermarket manufacturers, distributors, and installers now have a clear pathway to develop compatible infrastructure, software interfaces, and service protocols—driving innovation, market expansion, and long-term growth in the specialty equipment sector.
